Fear of Elevators
Following the Laker’s triumphant victory Sunday night, Neil and I mustered enough energy to unload the van at our rehearsal studio so that it could be serviced the following day. We lazily stacked and rolled all the equipment into the freight elevator, closed the gate, and hit the button for the 2nd floor. Upon liftoff, the elevator made a creepy creaky sound, raised about 5 feet off the ground, and stopped. “NOOOOOOO WAAAAAAAYYYY!!!” We hit the alarm button, but no one was in the building as it was already about 11pm. Trying to stay calm, we hit the button for emergency assistance. The voice on the other end was clearly a woman, but sounded like she was talking on a megaphone through a two-can-and-a-string phone. It took a good 10 minutes for Neil to communicate the 10 digits of his cell phone # and while that was going on we discovered that the gate was not locked. Terrified by the thought of waiting in the elevator for the repairman to show, we slid under the gate Indiana Jones style and continued the asinine conversation with our so-called helpline. Neil made the mistake of telling them that we escaped the elevator so they refused to send out a tech to help us even though ALL of our gear was still in the elevator. They wanted us to wait till the morning and proceeded to blame us for leaving the elevator and not being willing to fix it, like we know anything about elevator repair. Fuckers! Eventually, our building manager (bless his heart, on a Sunday night) got involved and sent out a grumpy handyman to fix the elevator. It took him 5 minutes to locate the problem and we were back in business. Needless to say, we’ve been taking the stairs lately.
